Most of the modern computer device uses USB 3.0 port. With the 3.0 USB port, you may encounter the USB composite device that can’t work properly with the USB 3.0 issue while you try to connect a USB device (e.g. printer, USB drive) with your new computer device. If you currently facing this issue, don’t be panic, here we will discuss the methods to fix this issue. Before discussing the fix methods, let’s discuss the reasons that cause this issue;

Causes of USB Composite Device Can’t Work Properly with USB 3.0

When you know the reasons for any problem, it is easy to solve the problem. Your device creates issues with the USB driver for several reasons. Especially for these three reasons, are marked as the root cause of USB and printer issues of your PC or laptop;

1. Configuration Issue of USB

The USB controller does not allow older devices or new devices to connect to your PC when it is not properly configured. This is the main reason that causes this type of USB issue on your PC. You can fix this by troubleshooting or reconfiguring the USB connection and controller.

2. Legacy Support of USB

Disabled USB legacy support of your PC can be a reason that leads you to the device can’t work properly with USB 3.0. So, it is important to enabling USB legacy support on your PC. It allows older USB connections to come into the USB port of your PC.

3. Driver Controller of USB 

An outdated and improperly installed USB driver could trigger the device can’t work properly with USB 3.0. You may notice this problem when your USB driver controller is faulty and outdated.

Methods of Fixing USB Composite Device Can’t Work Properly with USB 3.0

Though these USB or printer issues are mainly occurring for three reasons, yet there are several methods to fix this issue. You can follow these fix methods to fix the USB composite device issue;

1. Running Troubleshooter

This is the most common solution of the device can’t work properly with USB 3.0 issue. Windows USB troubleshooter is a Microsoft-developed tool that can automatically diagnose and repair USB. It is a web-based tool that can be downloaded from Microsoft’s official site.  

After downloading the tool, you have to follow the on-screen prompts to troubleshoot the USB connection of your PC. This tool will automatically find the USB issues and apply fixes to them.

2. Updating the USB Driver

If the issue occurs for outdated and faulty USB drivers, updating the USB drivers could fix the problem. You can update the USB drivers from the device management section of your PC.

To update the USB driver of your PC, you can follow these steps;

Step-1; Open the run dialog box by pressing Windows + R key on your keyboard. Type devmgmt.msc and press Enter to open the Device Management section of your PC.

Step-2; Scroll down in the device manager section to find the Universal Serial Bus controllers. Once you find it, expand it to see the USB drivers.

Step-3; Left-click on the composite device to see the update driver option. Click on it and follow the on-screen prompts to update the PC drivers of your PC. 

You can also use driver updater software to update all your outdated drivers. A driver updater software automatically detects outdated and faulty drivers and updates them.

Now, plug in the USB again to see if the problem is fixed now. If the issue is still not solved, follow the next method of re-installing USB drivers.

3. Re-installing USB Controllers

Sometimes, USB drivers don’t work properly despite being updated. In this case, reinstalling the USB controllers could help you to fix the device that can’t properly work with the USB 3.0 issue.

You can follow these steps to re-install the USB Controllers;

Step-1; Open the run dialog box by pressing Windows + R key on your keyboard. Type devmgmt.msc and press Enter to open the Device Management section of your PC.

Step-2; Scroll down in the device manager section to find the Universal Serial Bus controllers. Once you find it, expand it to see the USB drivers.

Step-3; Right-click on the composite USB controller to see Uninstall Device option. Click on it and follow the on-screen prompts to uninstall the USB composite driver.

Step-4; Restart your PC after uninstalling the drivers. Your PC will automatically scan for the missing drivers and install an updated version of them.

Now, plug in the USB again to see if the problem is fixed now. If the issue is still not solved, follow the next method of enabling the USB legacy of your PC.

4. Enabling the USB Legacy

Sometimes, disabled USB legacy support triggers the device can’t work properly with USB 3.0 issues on your PC. So, check your BIOS Settings to check out the USB legacy support is enabled.

You can follow these steps to check and enable the USB legacy support on your PC;

Step-1; Turn off your PC and turn it on again after a few minutes. To enter BIOS settings, you have to continuously press F2, DEL/delete, or F12 key (depends on your manufacturer) while turning on your PC.

Step-2; Use the arrow keys and navigate through the Advanced > USB Configuration > Enable USB Legacy Support.

Step-3; If the USB Legacy is disabled, enable it and exit to save changes.

Now, plug in the USB again to see if the problem is fixed now. If the issue is still not solved, follow the next method of preventing Windows from turning off the device.

5. Preventing Windows from Turning off Device

Sometimes, windows glitch automatically turns off the USB to save power, especially if you are using a laptop. You can avoid this type of power-saving glitch by changing the settings of your PC.

Follow these steps to prevent the Windows from turning off USB;

Step-1; Open the run dialog box by pressing Windows + R key on your keyboard. Type devmgmt.msc and press Enter to open the Device Management section of your PC.

Step-2; Scroll down in the device manager section to find the Universal Serial Bus controllers. Once you find it, expand it to see the USB drivers and controller device.

Step-3; Right-click on USB Root Hub and select Properties to open the USB Root Hub Properties window.

Step-4; Go to the Power Management tab of the root hub properties window and uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.

Now, plug in the USB again to see if the problem is fixed now. If the issue is still not solved, follow the next method of hardware and device troubleshooter.

6. Hardware and Device Troubleshooter

Running the hardware and device troubleshooter is an effective method to troubleshoot this USB issue. Meanwhile, the device troubleshooter finds the issues of your device and automatically applies a fix on them.

You can follow these steps to run the hardware and device troubleshooter on PC;

Step-1; Navigate through Windows Settings > Update & Security. In the update and security setting window, select Troubleshoot from the left-hand menus.

Step-2; Click on Additional Troubleshooters to see the troubleshooting options. From the additional troubleshooting options, select the printer and click on run the troubleshooter.

Now, your PC will automatically search for the issues with your printers and apply fixes to them. Plugin the USB again to see if the problem is fixed now. If the issue is still not solved yet, you can use a USB expansion card.

7. Expansion Card USB 2.0

If any of the above-described methods didn’t work for you, you can use a USB 2.0 Expansion card. USB expansion card can effectively connect your USB drive and printer with your new laptop or PC.
